Due to his current activities in Israel, Mr. Peres has regrettably been unable to forward a statement to us. We preferred to release his and Mr. Arafat's statements together. However, Mr. Arafat's statement was written prior to the scheduling, canceling and rescheduling of the peace talks. We are certain that today, Mr. Arafat, too, would be unavailable for comment.
We had to make a decision, whether to further hold Mr. Arafat's statement, not knowing how long it might be before Mr. Peres was again available. We made the decision to release the one statement, and wait for the other.
We doubt that there will be any question on the part of our readers about Mr. Peres's stand on terrorism. We also feel that the fact that his persisitence in resuming the Peace Talks is comment enough on Mr. Peres's wishes and intentions. We expect that our readers will share with us the view that the matters at hand in the Foreign Affairs office in Israel are of sufficient priority to all of us that we will happily wait.
