Gorbachev says, arms race continues to be a threat
"We need to develop a regime of control over arms trade," says Former President of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev, "and build international relations not on force, but on a balance of interests."

In 1986 Gorbachev initiated the world's first significant nuclear arms reduction talks in 1986, resulting in the US and the USSR jointly eliminating intermediate-ranged nuclear and conventional ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles.
We recently asked him what the real security threats are today.

East Timor: President José Ramos-Horta's Anti-
Poverty Initiatives

Mary Wald, Chairman of TheCommunity.com, traveled to Darwin, Australia in March to visit Nobel Laureate José Ramos-Horta, recovering from an assassination attempt. While there she helped to edit and place his first commentary on the incident, which ran on CNN.com on April 14.

We are incredibly excited to announce one of the other results of that trip -- the launch of a new network on our site -- a network specifically for the Fund for East Timor, that highlights the tremendous work he has been doing to lift the Timorese people out of poverty.

President Ramos-Horta, who has now returned to Timor, has always been a champion of the poor. Today as he recovers, he is even more committed to addressing the injustice inherent in not having the resources to earn one's basic survival needs.

Find out about his Anti-poverty Initiatives now. If you have suggestions on additional ways to help, let us know.

With the help of our Youth Ambassadors, they can do projects with these Superheroes, and sometimes even talk to them online!
