Building Peace

test Peace is not just an absence of armed conflict. Peace is communities that are able to thrive without sliding into conflict. Peace is farmers working their fields, children going to school, couples falling in love, businesses expanding ---- people living without the threat of obliteration hanging over their heads.

The necessary elements for peaceful communities include understanding human rights, literacy, global health, reducing extreme poverty and more.

East Timor: President Jose Ramos-Horta survives assassination attempt

On February 11 2008, Jose Ramos-Horta, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and President of East Timor, narrowly survived an assassination attempt at his home.

As he was recovering, Mary Wald, Chairman of TheCommunity.com, traveled to Darwin to see him.

Nobel Laureates issue Charter for a World Without Violence

"No state or individual can be secure in an insecure world. The values of nonviolence in intention, thought, and practice have grown from an option to a necessity."

In December 2007 the World Summit of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates released the Charter for a World Without Violence, a document three years in the making.

Our Youth Ambassadors in Rome

Paul Simon in East Timor

East Timor is one of the countries hardest hit by malaria. In this equatorial environment, malaria is responsible for 40% of the deaths.

In August, 2005, TheCommunity.com joined Paul Simon in East Timor to launch distribution of 4000 mosquito nets to pregnant women and children.

Paul Simon in East Timor, Day 2

On Day Two of the malaria distribution, we travel into the mountains, to Hatubelico. We are greeted by hundreds wearing traditional clothing, with lots of singing and dancing.

This time an American doctor travels with us, bringing a mobile clinic to inoculate children and treat acute conditions.
