Since 2000, the focus of TheCommunity.com has been on peace and human rights. In those years, through working with the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates and some of the leading organizations in these fields, we have come to broaden our view of peace and what it means.
We've come to understand that building a better world is not just a matter of wishing people would lay down their arms and stop committing atrocities. Building a better world involves creating the conditions where whole generations can grow up knowing that there is a better way -- and knowing that they can have a better life.
Yes, building peace certainly involves conflict resolution and control of the development of weapons of mass destruction. But it also involves people understanding what human rights are. And sometimes doing this even requires teaching people to read. Sometimes it means giving them access to the means of survival, including food. It requires caring about the survival of the planet as a whole.
We have tried to take what we have learned in these years to break down six categories of peace building, pointing to things we can all do to change the state of our world. We refer to them as the six key building blocks of peace – Building Peace, Human Rights, Conflict Resolution, Disarmament, Women’s issues, Sustainability. We offer information on each of these building blocks, important voices talking about what can be done, and specific actions you can play a vital role in.
Through our community, you can connect to people from around the globe who share your interests and your causes.
We hope the information and opportunities we offer will help you to make a difference in the world.
